A Look Inside Our Workshop: Where Timeless Jewellery Comes to Life

A piece of jewellery being assembled in Rudolf Heltzel's workshop

Introduction:

Behind every piece of Rudolf Heltzel jewellery is something quietly powerful — not just a stone or setting, but a world of mastery, ritual, and purpose. Our Kilkenny workshop is more than a space where fine jewellery is crafted. It’s where legacy is preserved, traditions are honoured, and timeless design is brought to life, one piece at a time.

This is your invitation into our inner sanctum. A behind-the-scenes look at how heritage techniques, meticulous precision, and artistic soul converge to create jewellery that transcends trends and speaks across generations.

A Workshop Rooted in History

Founded in 1969 by Rudolf Heltzel in the heart of Kilkenny, our workshop has quietly endured — much like the jewellery crafted within its walls. After training and working at the Kilkenny Design Workshops, Rudolf established his own studio, bringing with him a spirit of collaboration, artistry, and innovation.

Nestled within the walls of an 18th century Georgian townhouse, this was never a factory floor. It was a sanctuary for craft, where substance took precedence over speed, and every detail was shaped with care. That philosophy remains at the core of everything we do today. Each piece is created not for the moment, but to last a lifetime — with purpose, precision, and history woven into every design.

Where Ideas Are Born

Every piece begins with a sketch — hand-drawn, just as Rudolf did for over 50 years. Ideas are not rushed; they are allowed to evolve.

We study the stones. We test proportions. We refine lines until they speak the language of timeless design. This is the design phase — equal parts inspiration, geometry, and intuition.

The Art of Making

In the next room, gold is carefully cut, forged, textured, and sculpted—all by hand. Our skilled goldsmiths work with traditional tools such as hammers, saws, files, and flame, combining these with the finest materials including 18ct gold, platinum, and rare gemstones. Their expertise comes from generational knowledge passed down from master to apprentice, ensuring every technique honors time-tested craftsmanship.

Each movement is intentional, and every step is taken with patience, because true quality cannot be rushed. The result is jewellery that feels substantial in the hand, perfectly balanced in form, and deeply meaningful in presence.

Working with Rare Gemstones

We do not chase trends. We choose gemstones that have something to say — tourmalines with personality, rock crystals with dramatic inclusions, druzies with cosmic shimmer.

Many stones are carved by world-renowned lapidary artists like Bernd Munsteiner or Lorenz Baermann. Once they arrive, we study them. Sometimes, they sit for years before the right design reveals itself. At Rudolf Heltzel, we wait for the gemstone to speak — and we listen.

Living Legacy

Our workshop is not just a workplace. It is a learning space. A place where apprentices are trained, and the goldsmithing tradition is not only preserved but passed forward with pride.

Christopher Heltzel is leading a new chapter, continuing the tradition through a contemporary lens, while maintaining the soul of the old ways. The heartbeat of the workshop continues.

“We don’t just make jewellery. We make the kind of beauty that changes people — and gets passed on.”
— Christopher Heltzel
