The story of Rudolf Heltzel begins in Berlin, where Rudolf began his training at the age of sixteen. His early education and subsequent work in Sweden shaped an approach to jewellery that combined traditional goldsmithing with a distinctly modern design sensibility.

In 1966, Rudolf was invited to Ireland to establish a jewellery and metalsmithing workshop at the Kilkenny Design Workshops. Two years later, he established his own jewellery business in Kilkenny.

More than half a century later, Rudolf Heltzel remains based on Patrick Street in the heart of Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile. The studio continues to shape the story of the jewellery house, combining generations of goldsmithing knowledge with contemporary design.

Today, Rudolf’s son, Christopher Heltzel, leads the business from the same Kilkenny studio. He continues his father’s commitment to making jewellery by hand while developing the house’s contemporary identity for a new generation.

Rudolf developed his distinctive approach to fine jewellery long before he arrived in Ireland.

He began his training in 1956 at the Meisterschule für das Kunsthandwerk in Berlin. His early years in the profession included working with silversmith Max Olofs, followed by a period in Stockholm working with the renowned Swedish designer and silversmith Sigurd Persson.

These experiences gave Rudolf a European foundation in metalwork, design and craftsmanship, from traditional silversmithing to the disciplined forms of Swedish modernism.

In 1966, an invitation brought him to Ireland, where he established a jewellery and metalsmithing workshop at the Kilkenny Design Workshops and helped train a generation of Irish goldsmiths.

Kilkenny would become his home, and the foundation for the jewellery house that bears his name.

In 1968, Rudolf established his own goldsmithing workshop in Kilkenny.

From the beginning, Rudolf built the studio around a belief in jewellery with a strong sense of design and individual craftsmanship. Rather than separating design from making, he brought the two together at the workbench.

That principle remains central to Rudolf Heltzel jewellery today.

Our studio at 10 Patrick Street continues to be a place where jewellery is designed, made and finished by hand. Here, traditional goldsmithing knowledge meets contemporary design, allowing each new piece to develop through its material, proportions and relationship with the wearer.

The jewellery begins with the material, the proportions and the intended relationship between the wearer and the finished piece.

Traditional goldsmithing techniques remain central to the process. In our Kilkenny studio, we work, form and finish precious metals by hand, bringing together generations of technical knowledge with a contemporary approach to jewellery design.

Working with fine materials carries a responsibility — to the planet, to the people who cut and shape each stone, and to the generations of craftspeople who preserved these skills.

We consider it an honour to work with these materials. Our role is to understand their character, respect their individuality and bring their qualities forward through thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship.

This approach allows each piece to retain something of the hand that made it, while remaining distinctly of its time.

The legacy of Rudolf Heltzel is not simply a collection of past work. It is a living practice.

Today, Rudolf’s son, Christopher Heltzel, leads Rudolf Heltzel Jewellery from the same Kilkenny studio. As the second generation of the Heltzel family to shape the house, he continues the principles established by his father while developing a contemporary design language of his own.

The commitment to craftsmanship remains. So does the belief that jewellery should have a strong sense of individuality.

But the work continues to evolve — through new forms, contemporary proportions, unusual gemstones and an ongoing exploration of the relationship between fine jewellery and the wearer.

This is the next chapter of Rudolf Heltzel.
